How Adult BMI Is Calculated
For adults, the metric formula is:
BMI = weight in kilograms / (height in metres × height in metres)
If height is entered in centimetres, divide it by 100 before squaring it. A person who weighs 70 kg and is 1.75 m tall has a BMI of approximately 22.9:
70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9
The U.S. customary formula uses pounds and inches:
BMI = 703 × weight in pounds / (height in inches × height in inches)
How Adult BMI Categories Are Commonly Interpreted
For adults aged 20 and older, commonly used categories are:

BMI also says nothing directly about cardiovascular fitness, sleep, nutrition, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, mental health, or the effect of prolonged sitting. Those factors may be more actionable than a single calculated number.
