QR codes work by arranging dark and light modules into a grid that scanners interpret as encoded data. The three large finder patterns in the corners establish the code’s position and orientation, while timing patterns and error-correction data help a scanner reconstruct the message even when the image is viewed at an angle or is partially damaged.
Error correction is the most important advanced setting. Level L reserves the least space for recovery and leaves the most capacity for data. M is a good general-purpose default. Q and H devote progressively more space to recovery, which makes the finished code denser but more tolerant of damage or a small center logo. Use H when adding a logo, and keep the logo modest: error correction is a safety margin, not permission to cover a large part of the symbol.
A QR code needs a quiet zone—the empty border around the module grid—to separate it from nearby artwork. Four modules is the conventional safe default. Reducing the margin can make the result look tighter, but it also makes scanning less reliable when the code is printed against a busy background or placed near text and other graphics.
